I picked up today where I left off last time -- making more members. I made them all using exactly the same process I used before. First I clamp them down and cut them, like so.
Then I brush the piece down, like so.
And then I check it out against my master template to make sure it's going to fit, like so.
Then, I repeated. Sixteen times. Then I took a short break to hold up the camera and take a picture.
With all the pieces cut, it's time to get them all ground down to their final shape. This process takes a long time, and made up the vast majority of my day. That being said, there isn't much to it. Just like cutting the members, this process consists of a few simple steps, repeated over and over again. First, I take a steel member and its template.
Then, I transfer the template edges onto the surface of the steel.
Finally, I grind the steel until there's no more black, and check it against the master template and other steel pieces. Sometimes I'd have to do a bit more grinding to get everything to fit just right, but this one looks fine.
Then, I repeated. Twenty nine times. I was hoping to get a chance to weld these all together tonight, but I forgot just how long grinding 30 pieces of steel to shape can take when I set that goal. I've got a lot of work ahead of me, and a jump on it would have been really nice, but I just didn't have time tonight.
It's almost all ready to be welded together. I just have to mount some more clamps into the table, and then I can get started. I think I can get the top done in one more work day. Unfortunately, it's getting late, and there are people who are going to want to try to go to sleep, so I've got to throw in the towel here for the night.
